Qing Dynasty — Jade Staff Head in the Form of a Jiu Bird
Material: Jade
Specifications: L12.2cm(±3%)
Carved from fine celadon jade, this staff head has a smooth, lustrous texture and a soft gray-green tone, with areas of natural brown patina that lend it an antique charm. The finial is sculpted in the round as a Jiu Bird, a creature revered in ancient China for its gentle nature and auspicious symbolism. The bird features a slightly hooked beak, round eyes, and a long crest flowing backward from the crown. Its wings lie close to the plump body, and both the feathers and tail are finely incised with delicate lines. The tail curls slightly upward, creating a sense of vitality and grace. A round mortise opening beneath allows it to fit onto the shaft of a staff. Compact and refined, the piece radiates warmth and quiet elegance.
The tradition of the Jiu Bird-topped staff (jiu zhang) originated from the “tooth-staff” (chizhang) system of the Zhou dynasty. The bird-form ornament likely evolved from ancient bird-totem worship. Since the pre-Qin era, such staffs symbolized respect, longevity, and virtuous seniority. By the Han dynasty, they had become marks of imperial favor for elders. The Book of the Later Han – Treatise on Rituals records:
In this context, the Jiu Bird embodies longevity, serenity, and auspicious well-being.
This jade staff head exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Qing-dynasty jade carving and conveys the traditional Chinese reverence for age and virtue. It stands as an artwork of both artistic refinement and profound cultural significance.

Mongolian Gilt-Bronze Square Seal with Mythical Beast Finial, Qing Dynasty
Material: Gilt-Bronze
Dimensions: H9.5 Seal 7x7 cm (±3%)This finely cast gilt-bronze seal is of substantial weight and lustrous patina, exuding an air of solidity and refinement. The form is square and well-proportioned, surmounted by a mythical beast finial modeled in the traditional auspicious and protective style.
The double-headed beast is shown recumbent, with bulging eyes, rounded snout, and open jaws revealing sharp teeth, conveying strength and vigilance. Its musculature is full and powerful, the posture commanding and dignified. Flowing manes fall neatly along the nape, while the sides of the spine are adorned with delicately rendered spiral curls—details that bring the creature vividly to life. The overall modeling captures a harmonious balance between motion and stillness.
The seal face is incised in zhuanshu (seal script) Tibetan characters. Based on its form and stylistic features, the piece may be identified as a Tibetan Buddhist–style seal. At the center of the seal face, the Tibetan inscription reads “The Great Precious Dharma King.” The dotted border and wave pattern are characteristic of Qing-period Tibetan gold seals, symbolizing radiating divine power and sacred protection. The triple-bead motif at the top and lotus-petal decoration at the base are common sacred symbols in Tibetan Buddhist art, representing the lotus throne and the wisdom of emptiness.
Thoughtfully conceived and exquisitely executed, this seal exemplifies both spiritual symbolism and artistic craftsmanship. The mythical beast is rendered with vitality and presence, embodying majesty and auspicious power. Serving not only as an official seal but also as a refined scholar’s object, it stands as a rare and distinguished example of Qing-dynasty metalwork—an elegant union of gravitas, vitality, and imperial grace.
