This Amitābha Buddha statue is meticulously hand-cast in red copper with selective gilding, crafted by Nepali artisans following Tibetan Buddhist traditions. It dates from approximately 200 to 350 years ago. The base is reinforced with a metal plate, hammered and riveted—a precise modification made by a later foreign collector. Originally, the statue would have formed part of a complete ensemble, including a lotus pedestal, stūpa-shaped base, halo, and ceremonial umbrella atop the head, symbolizing Amitābha Buddha’s boundless light and compassionate guidance toward the Western Pure Land.

Nepali red-copper Buddha statues have long been treasured in Tibetan Buddhism for their solid, warm-toned material and exquisite craftsmanship. This finely made Amitābha Buddha is a rare and enduring devotional figure of significant artistic and spiritual value.

The brush pot remains unpainted, preserving the natural warmth and texture of the bamboo. Its surface is finely polished, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The entire piece features a bamboo grove rendered in openwork carving, with two to three layers of depth. The intricate composition reveals banana leaves, pavilions, and vividly depicted figures inside a house, portraying a scholar reading by lamplight in an attic—symbolizing success in the imperial examinations and attainment of official rank.

The inscription bears the signature of Du Shushen (Fangjiao Shanren) and the title “Night Reading at Luling.” Brush pots with carved signatures are exceedingly rare, making this a superb example of refined bamboo carving artistry.

Carved from fine celadon jade, this staff head has a smooth, lustrous texture and a soft gray-green tone, with areas of natural brown patina that lend it an antique charm. The finial is sculpted in the round as a Jiu Bird, a creature revered in ancient China for its gentle nature and auspicious symbolism. The bird features a slightly hooked beak, round eyes, and a long crest flowing backward from the crown. Its wings lie close to the plump body, and both the feathers and tail are finely incised with delicate lines. The tail curls slightly upward, creating a sense of vitality and grace. A round mortise opening beneath allows it to fit onto the shaft of a staff. Compact and refined, the piece radiates warmth and quiet elegance.

The tradition of the Jiu Bird-topped staff (jiu zhang) originated from the “tooth-staff” (chizhang) system of the Zhou dynasty. The bird-form ornament likely evolved from ancient bird-totem worship. Since the pre-Qin era, such staffs symbolized respect, longevity, and virtuous seniority. By the Han dynasty, they had become marks of imperial favor for elders. The Longquan kilns, located in Longquan, Zhejiang Province, are among the most renowned producers of celadon in Chinese history. Their wares are celebrated for their jade-like texture and gentle bluish-green glaze, representing the refined craftsmanship of Ming dynasty celadon.

The tripod censer is a common form, typically with a round body, flat rim, or constricted neck, supported by three outward-curving or column-shaped legs, sometimes with upturned “cloud” handles. Such censers were used in religious and ritual contexts, as well as for scholarly and imperial display.

Characteristic features of Ming Longquan celadon include a soft greenish-blue glaze of rich, lustrous quality, with natural crackle patterns and an unglazed footring revealing grayish clay.

This piece also bears traces of ancient repair using the traditional “juzi” (metal staple) technique. These small U-shaped metal clamps were used to mend cracks in ceramics—a testament to the skill and resourcefulness of craftsmen in antiquity.
